End of October

How on Earth did we end up here? Oh I know, we have been learning in school for 41 days TODAY! How EXCITING! We have busy learning and adapting to our ever changing environment, and I am just going to say how PROUD I am of all of my students! Keep up the great work my firsties!

Language Arts/Phonics/Writing/Reading

For language arts, which is also known as grammar for my students, we have just finished up a quick unit on nouns! Now for the next two weeks we are going to be digging deeper into singular and plural nouns and possessive nouns! We should become experts by the end of this unit! We have become so awesome when we talk about nouns and how they are persons or places or things! We have categorized all the nouns that we come up with!

Phonics we have been busy learning about the double endings! If it is a short vowel sound, and it ends with f, l, or s sound, we are probably going to need to double our ending letter! There are some words that do not follow this rule, but that comes later! I do hope that you continue to practice with our students when it comes to spelling out our words!

We also have worked super hard at some diagraphs! These are two letters that make one sound, and the diagraphs we have focused on this past week was sh/th/ch! They all have a special movement to go with their sound, and I hope our friends can show you! Coming up next week we are going to be working on two more diagraphs! They are going to be wh/ph! This is so exciting as I am witnessing it when we are reading together, and I am so excited for this huge step!
I love Jack Hartmann, my students are so used to his videos that they get excited too!

Writing we have finished up our learning how to write a story, we will now be working on personal narratives! These are stories about us because we are professionals in our own way with our own stories! My goal is to have at least 3-4 pages per student, so we shall see how this goes! I am so proud of their writing! They are working very hard with their writing from making sure their letters are correctly formed, to making sure they have spaces in their sentences!

Reading we are currently working on books in our guided reading level! Most of my students have jumped in their reading level and for my students who have not, we are working extra hard, but having all my students reading at home outloud is going to help them become successful! If you need help knowing your child's reading level, let me know! We are a team!

Math

We have been focusing on teen numbers and how they are a whole group of 10 and some more! This is a very important step, and as a whole class, we have been talking about how important understanding place values is!

This is a stepping stone for my students! We talk about how math builds on top of each other, we have to learn this in order to do this! So I explained it to my fabulous friends that it is like we are building a house! We need a floor before we can build a wall, and that is why we are building from the ground up!

Check out the pictures to see how we did a walk around the room for our learning!

Science/Social Studies

Science we are focusing on animal habitats until Thanksgiving! We only have science two days a week, so it seems like it will take forever, but in reality, we are gaining deeper understanding of our goals! We just ended up finishing our plant unit, and we discussed how animals are like plants! It was a fun discussion! Ask your little about animal needs!

Social Studies we are working on Families from Long Ago! We talked about the differences back then and we looked at pictures from the past and discussed how things look now! (You would be surprised at how many students didn't know pictures were in black and white and they had asked me if I was alive back then! Insert jaw-dropped face here!)

Religion

We just finished our first unit in our religion books! Almost every day, we are also focusing on a new Saint and have learned about several Saints and why they are Saint! We are so lucky to be able to hear stories about them and how they became Saints! It is becoming inspiring as we are also learning stories from the Bible and many of my students have asked SO many wonderful questions that I did not have all the answers too all about how WONDERFUL our God is!

Exciting News:

We have some exciting news for next week! We have a student teacher coming into our classroom to observe our class for about 8 weeks, and she will end up teaching a lesson or two to our wonderful students! Her name is Mrs. Volkman and she is wanting to become a teacher! I know the students are going to be super awesome in welcoming Mrs. Volkman to our classroom!

ALSO, check out the email from our St. Edward parent in regards to the new fundraising event that replaces our Bloomin' Bonanaza! It is a Golf-Outing! And it is May 15, 2021!
